Drawing Stitches

Stitches are the backbone of knitting. Their symbolized notation on conventional knitting charts plays a crucial role for anyone reading a knitting pattern. Yarn Toolkit provides knit symbols consistent with those outlined by the Craft Yarn Council for writing patterns and plans on incorporating addional symbols in the future. Here's how to use Yarn Toolkit's wide collection of stitches effectively when creating knitting charts for your next project.

Navigating the Stitch Palette

The stitch palette is displayed on the bottom section of the toolbar when the mode is set to stitch editing. To enable stitch editing, click on the center icon in the toolbar, which will initially be represented by the by a purlstitch.

Select the stitch drawing mode button to switch from color mode.Confirm that stitch drawing mode is set to draw stitches on the chart.

Once this is done, a set of commonly used stitch symbols should be displayed. The purlstitch is by default the active stitch when you first create a pattern, and will be the stitch that is ultimately drawn onto the grid unless you change it (see section below).

Changing the Active Stitch

The active stitch is indicated by a dark red border and is the stitch that will ultimately be drawn onto the knitting grid. To quickly change the active stitch to a different one, click on any other stitch visible in the palette. In the example below, the active stitch is changed from the purlstitch to the knit through back loop stitch. Notice how the stitch symbol in the top bar also changes to match the currently active stitch ().

Select the knit-through-back-loop (ktbl) stitch to set it as the active stitch.Confirm the knit-through-back-loop stitch is now the active stitch.

Adding a New Stitch

Yarn Toolkit provides a plethora of other stitch symbols which are shown by expanding the toolbar. To switch out a stitch in the toolbar with another stitch not already displayed, click the active stitch again (or double click a non-active stitch) in the palette to trigger a dropdown display of additional stitches to choose from. The new stitch that is selected will replace the active stitch in the palette.

Click the active stitch to open more stitch symbols.Select the right-slanting make-1 (M1R) stitch symbol from the expanded stitch palette.Use the right-slanting make-1 (M1R) stitch as the active stitch.

In the example above, the toolbar is exanpanded to replace the knit through back loopstitch with a right-slanting make one stitch.

Changing Stitch Color

Yarn Toolkit allows you to change the color of the stitch drawn onto the knitting chart. This is particularly useful for charts that contain dark colors, and contrast is needed to make stitch more visible.

To change the color of a stitch symbol, click on the color icon on the right hand side to display a dropdown of different stitch colors to choose from. The underline of the stitch in the toolbar should adjust to represent the new stitch color.

Open the stitch color menu (right hand side) and choose a new color.Draw stitches in the newly selected color.

Cable Stitches

To draw cable stitches onto the knitting chart, change the stitch view in the expanded toolbar from "regular" to "cable." Yarn Toolkit provides over 100 different variations of cable stitches to work with, and plans on introducing more in the future.

Note: Changing the color of cable stitches is currently not supported.
